Armstrong accepts Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies award on behalf of staff

Toronto, ON, July 5th, 2010 – Armstrong, a leading supplier of quality HVAC and fluid flow equipment for residential, commercial and industrial applications, was recently honoured with a plaque commemorating the company's re-qualification as one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies.

Keith Kwan, Senior Manager of Private Company Services for Deloitte, presented Charles Armstrong, President, with a plaque during an all-staff meeting held at the company's Toronto facility. Highlighting the contributing factors behind this year's award, Keith pointed to Armstrong's sustained success, despite a down economy. "The award-winning companies are those companies that not only managed through the tough and rough seas, but positioned themselves to be prepared for when the market does pick up and Armstrong is quite well-positioned" Keith explained.

This year's re-qualification measurement considered how companies were managing in a weaker market, when most industries showed either flat or decreasing sales. Accepting the award Charles Armstrong commented that the achievement is a reflection of the contributions of all employees and encouraged the organization to continue focusing on meeting and exceeding the needs of customers.

Integrated Future for Armstrong

June 8th 2010:- Armstrong has announced the formal merger of its two key areas of operation in the UK. The off-site construction division of the company (Armstrong Integrated Systems based in Halesowen) and the HVAC equipment arm of Armstrong in the UK (headquartered in Manchester and Redhill) will now operate as a single company under a new legal framework. The move is expected to streamline and simplify administration and day-to-day contact for Armstrong customers who frequently require products and services from both divisions.

Richard Strode, Armstrong’s managing director, said, “For the last five years, both companies have operated side by side, offering distinct specialisms to the market. Armstrong Integrated Ltd will continue to leverage the strengths of our core product offering but with a greater emphasis on carbon reduction and whole life cost for the system, not just at a product level, but as a single provider of energy solutions and services to both the new construction market and the refurbishment/retrofit market.”

The integration of the two companies enables Armstrong to further strengthen and accelerate its product development activities in areas including:

Low and zero carbon heating and cooling including the integration of renewable technologies such as biomass, heat pumps and solar thermal.
Variable speed pumping technology and integrated control solutions.
Fire, water supply, heat exchanger and sealed system expansion solutions.

The company will continue to operate using the well-known and respected Armstrong brand name. A new legal name has been chosen for the company however to recognise the merger of all operations – Armstrong Integrated Ltd.

“The name ‘Armstrong Integrated Ltd’ has been chosen to not only reflect the integrated design of our products and customer solutions, but also our desire to unify internally as a business and to communicate our ambition to form partnerships with our customers” explained Strode.

“The move, in response to market feedback, will allow us to deliver an even better level of customer service providing enhanced customer access to our specialist teams across three centres of excellence. Our knowledge and capabilities enable us to provide customer support and services throughout the whole lifecycle of an installation from manufacture, to delivery, right the way through to service and replacement parts and products.”

The changes are designed to support Armstrong’s continued growth in the UK market and do not involve any scaling down of activities. Operations will continue at all three sites – Halesowen, Manchester and Redhill – with the existing workforce and management structure. The changes are effective as of June 7th 2010.

Armstrong Extends Range of Intelligent Variable Speed Pumps

August 14th, 2009 - Armstrong Limited has extended the range of Intelligent Variable Speed (IVS) and IVS Sensorless pumps with integrated controls.

The IVS and IVS Sensorless offerings are now available with integrated controls to 75hp (55kW) on series 4300-IVS and 4302-IVS dualARM vertical in-line pumps. Separate stand-alone controls are available for larger units IVS units and for the following commercial pump series: 4030, 4280, 4300, 4302, 4380, 4382 4600 and 4700.

Intelligent variable speed technology allows pumps to operate according to a building’s demand load. When demand is low, the pumps automatically reduce speed, and when demand rises, the pumps increase speed. Operating a pump at varying speeds reduces energy consumption and extends the life of the unit.

Adding the Sensorless option to the IVS controller results in further savings in capital and installation costs. The Sensorless option saves building owners the cost of installing, commissioning and maintaining remote-mounted sensors. The IVS Sensorless uses patented software technology to sense changes in the building load and adjusts speed to meet the demand. The integrated controls add little to the footprint of the unit. Since the IVS Sensorless unit is typically operating at the part-load with reduced speed, control valve effectiveness and the life of the pump motor bearings are extended.

    IPP Award for 2009

    And the Winner is... Armstrong!!

Frequently referred to as the HVAC industry’s Oscars – the H&V News Awards were held April 30th at Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Armstrong had been short-listed in the category of Air Conditioning Product of the Year for the IPP-CHW Ultra Efficient Chilled Water Integrated Plant Package, and was selected the winner!

“Open to manufacturers of air conditioning equipment and components. Judges will look for genuinely new innovation or a novel application of existing technology to new markets – those launching “me–to” products should not apply. Aesthetic effect, efficiency and the demonstration of commercial success are factors that are taken into account. The product’s environmental credentials will be scrutinized closely. Third party evidence of performance gains credit. “

A comment posted on the H&V News web site quotes editor Simon Duddy stating: “We are in the midst of difficult times, but that makes it more important than ever to celebrate excellence and innovation in the hvac industry. We have not been disappointed by the calibre of this year’s entries, whose efforts speak volumes for the resilience and ingenuity of firms and individuals working within h&v.”

The Armstrong Integrated Plant Package system is the leading HVAC chilled water system available, offering 60% to 80% energy savings compared to today’s standard plant designs. Taking into account the initial costs, the installation savings, energy savings, reduced maintenance expenses and extended equipment life, the IPP-CHW has a 35% lower 5-year, and a 50% lower 20-year life-cycle cost than standard chilled water plant designs. To everyone involved, congratulations on receiving some well-deserved industry recognition.

    Armstrong Launches Design Envelope Boosters

March 28th, 2009 – Armstrong Limited, a leading supplier of high quality, high-efficiency HVAC and fluid-handling equipment for residential, commercial and industrial applications introduces the Design Envelope 6800 IVS Booster System to the North American market.

Faced with unpredictable supply pressure and varying system demands, many building owners and designers choose to boost water pressure using a combination of pumping and control. The Armstrong Design Envelope Booster Packages provide users with a reliable supply of domestic water.

The Design Envelope Booster is ideal for retrofit applications in large structures, such as schools, hotels, hospitals, and residential and commercial buildings. The Booster System provides significant savings in a number of areas, ranging from installation, operations and energy costs.

The Design Envelope Booster uses vertical multi-stage pumps, giving the unit a smaller footprint, compared to a traditional booster system. The space-saving design of the Design Envelope package requires a smaller housekeeping pad, leading to a reduction in material and on-site labor costs. The Design Envelope Booster System is factory pre-set to the building’s initial design load and factory tested to ensure a quick and trouble-free installation.

The Armstrong Design Envelope 6800 IVS Booster System utilizes variable speed technology, which means the pumps change speed in order to meet system demand. Unlike a constant speed system, the variable speed pumping technology ensures pumps do not run at full-speed unnecessarily, variable speed operation saves energy and reduces wear on the pumps. In addition, the Booster unit does not work against a pressure regulating valve, so there is no wasted energy. There is a no-flow shutdown and optional tank, allowing the pumps to be turned off when there is no demand. All these features help to reduce energy use and lower operational costs.

Two unique features of the Design Envelope Booster System that can save you money are Soft-Fill and Pressure Setback. The Soft-Fill application is used during the start-up of the booster or after a power outage and reduces the occurrence of water hammer. This is a result of air in the pipes, compressed by water pressure, which can damage fittings and system components with the risk of flooding of the building. The Pressure Setback application reduces energy consumption by reducing the system pressure setting at low flows. This allows compensation for overly conservative friction loss calculations.

Armstrong Limited Presents The Intelligent Variable Speed Pump

March 24th, 2009 – Armstrong Limited, a leading supplier of quality, high-efficiency HVAC and fluid-handling equipment for residential, commercial and industrial applications has introduced two new models to the Intelligent Variable Speed (IVS) Pump Series.

The Armstrong IVS Series now includes the following two models: 4300 Split-Coupled Vertical In-Line and 4302 Split-Coupled dualArm. The new models range in size from 1.5hp to 75hp. Both the 4300 and 4302 IVS units can be controlled through a building automation system (BAS) or the Armstrong Integrated Pumping System (IPS).

The Armstrong IVS Pump is also available with a sensorless option, providing savings in several areas including capital, installation and energy costs.

The IVS Sensorless Series is unique in that the unit does not require the installation of a differential pressure sensor. Eliminating the need for a sensor leads to a reduction in equipment, installation, and wiring costs. It also results in lower commissioning costs as sensor positioning issues will not slow down the project.

The IVS Sensorless has a variable frequency drive (VFD) built into the pump, making the unit a compact and ideal space-saving solution for any plant room. The VFD is pre-programmed at the factory to meet HVAC system demands, but is also adjustable on-site, giving an installer the flexibility to replicate sensor positions at various distances from the pump. This removes problems associated with incorrect sensor placement and allows for optimal energy savings.

The Sensorless option is embedded into the IVS variable speed drive, which means the pump automatically changes speed to meet system demand. This feature helps to save energy, and also extends the life of the pump and motor bearings.

    Armstrong Limited Celebrates 75 Years!

February 17th, 2009 – Armstrong Limited, a leading supplier of quality, high-efficiency HVAC and fluid-handling equipment for residential, commercial and industrial applications is proud to announce the company is celebrating its 75th year of operations.

Samuel Allan Armstrong founded the company in 1934 in the midst of The Great Depression. From there, under the leadership of James A.C. Armstrong, Samuel’s son, the company grew from one manufacturing facility to include plants around the world. James Armstrong established the future direction of the company by investing in new technologies and expanding the company into new markets. In 1990, James passed the company to his two sons, Charles and Jim Armstrong.

Now a third-generation family-owned business, Armstrong’s presence in the HVAC market has extended far beyond the borders of its North American roots. The company has survived four major recessions, and grown to become a leader in the industry. Armstrong was one of the first to offer the vertical in-line pump (1969). Years later, the company was among the first to introduce sensorless pump control (1997).

Armstrong is now leading the HVAC industry with its ECO:nomics sustainability platform and Design Envelope solutions. These solutions include both products and services, designed to save on capital and energy costs. Charles Armstrong, the company’s president, is a passionate supporter of sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives. He has rallied the organization around the ECO:nomics platform, and lent his expertise to establishing the position of a lower carbon footprint at no extra cost. This statement has become the tagline for Armstrong’s new ECO:nomics platform.

One example of ECO:nomics is a recent project done at Humber College in Toronto, Canada. The College needed to replace its aging and outdated chiller plant, and meet its commitment to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gases. To meet these requirements, the College chose to install the Armstrong Integrated Plant Control (IPC 11550) with Hartman LOOP ™ Technology and two pre-fabricated pump stations. The College’s Maintenance and Operations Manager reports the new HVAC system saved the College close to 50% in energy consumption and over $100,000 in combined energy and operational costs, over a one year period.
